Dr. Stephen Okelo
President
Dr. Stephen Okelo is a consultant anaesthesiologist and critical care physician with extensive experience in clinical practice, education, and leadership. He assumed the Presidency of the College of Anaesthesiologists of East, Central, and Southern Africa (CANECSA) in 2025 and is committed to advancing anaesthesia education, training, and standards throughout the ECSA region. He also formerly served as the President of the Kenya Society of Anaesthesiologists (KSA).
Dr. Okelo has played a significant role in CANECSA’s leadership. He previously served as Chair of the Education and Scientific Committee and as a member of both the Council and Executive Committee. His contributions have been instrumental in developing curriculums, mentoring faculty, and expanding access to high-quality anaesthesia training.
In addition to his leadership at CANECSA, Dr. Okelo is a lecturer in the Department of Surgery and Anaesthesiology at Maseno University, Kenya. He teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate students, integrating didactic instruction, clinical clerkships, and simulation-based training into the curriculum.
Dr. Okelo is a member of the WHO Technical Advisory Group on Integrated Clinical Care (TAG-IC2) and has contributed to discussions on health workforce development, perioperative care, and patient safety. He has facilitated numerous medical education courses across Africa, including faculty development programs for anaesthesiologists in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ghana.
A graduate of Moi University School of Medicine, Dr. Okelo completed his Master of Medicine in Anaesthesia at the University of Nairobi and further training in cardiac anaesthesia at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. He obtained his Fellowship in Anaesthesia from CANECSA and has pursued additional training in medical education, simulation-based learning, and leadership development.
Committed to enhancing anaesthesia training and service delivery, Dr. Okelo continues to work closely with institutions and stakeholders to develop sustainable strategies for expanding the anaesthesia workforce in East, Central, and Southern Africa.

Dr. Abel Mwale
Secretary General
Dr. Abel Mwale is the Chief Medical Officer at cfb Medical Centre. He is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care with experience in both the public and private sectors. He holds a master’s degree in business administration (MBA). He is the past President for the Society of Anaesthetists of Zambia (SAZ) and current President for the Zambia Association of Private Hospitals (ZAPH). He is chair of the Capacity building, Education & Training committee of the Healthcare Federation of Zambia (HFZ). He is a fellow of CANECSA (College of Anaesthesiologists of East, Central and Southern Africa) where he serves as council member, country representative for Zambia and examinations committee member. He is the immediate past secretary general of the African regional Section (ARS) of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA). He is a trainer in surgical emergencies, SAFE Courses, emergency medicine and first aid. He is a consultant in the formulation of health strategies. He is a lecturer under the Specialty Training programme (STP). He is a Young Executive Leader (YEL) fellow currently serving as International Hospital Federation Young Executive Leaders Alumni Ambassador for the Africa Region.

Dr. Doreen Mashava
Accademic Registrar
Dr Doreen Mashava is a Specialist Anesthesiologist practising in Harare, Zimbabwe. She is also the Academic Registrar for the College of Anesthesiologist of East Central and Southern Africa.
Doreen has been practising anaesthesia as a specialist for three decades, and has participated in training in anaesthesia while working for the University of Zimbabwe before moving into Private Practice.
She is a Founding Fellow of CANECSA and has served as the Academic Registrar of CANECSA since 2014. Besides sitting in CANECSA Council, Doreen also sits on the Education and Scientific Committee, Examination and Credentialing Committee and the General Purpose and Finance Committee.
Her goal is to enhance excellent education and training in anaesthesia to enhance the specialist anaesthesia workforce in the ECSA Region.
Besides her strong Catholic convictions, Doreen is also an ardent lover of golf.

Dr. Stella Singatiya
Deputy Academic Registrar
Dr. Singatiya Stella Chikumbanje is a Malawian Anesthesiologist and Intensive Care Specialist with a subspecialty in Pediatric Anesthesia. With over a decade of experience, including eight years in pediatric anesthesia, she has significantly contributed to advancing anesthetic care across East, Central, and Southern Africa.

Dr. Lomangisi Diana Sserumaga
Treasurer
Dr Lomangisi is a specialist anaesthesiologist from Eswatini currently practising in Mbabane Government Hospital in Eswatini. She is the first native Eswatini anaesthesiologist to practise in Eswatini and is passionate about improving the anaesthesia services in the country. She hold a Masters in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care from Makerere University, Uganda and is also a founding Fellow of the College of East, Central and Southern Africa. She has a special interest in Critical care and is currently the head of department of Mbabane Government Hospital Intensive Care Unit. She believe skills sharing and impacting knowledge goes a long way in the improvement of quality health care. This has led to her involvement in multiple continuous medical education activities with the Eswatini Medical and Dental Council as well as the Ministry of Health Eswatini.

Dr. Wangui Thang'a
Chair of Education and Scientific Committee (ESC)
A highly respected Pediatric Anesthesiologist, I bring extensive global experience from Kenya, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. I hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Medicine in Anesthesiology from Aga Khan University, Nairobi. My training includes fellowships at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (Cape Town), The Royal London Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital (London), with a focus on pediatric anesthesia, critical care, and retrieval.
Currently serving as Paediatric Anaesthesia Lead at Aga Khan University Hospital, I am deeply committed to advancing anesthetic care and education in Africa. As a foundation fellow and Deputy Chair of the CANECSA Education & Scientific Committee, I have led key initiatives, including the development of the CANECSA Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship curriculum and accreditation of training centers. My efforts focus on expanding subspecialty training, strengthening scientific contributions, and optimizing resources to improve healthcare outcomes.
Passionate about training and capacity building, I am dedicated to enhancing the role of CANECSA as a leader in anesthesiology education and research across the region.

Dr. Faith Moyo

Dr Faith V Moyo is a specialist anaesthesiologist currently practicing in Harare, Zimbabwe. She holds a Masters in Medicine -Anaesthesiology awarded by the University of Zimbabwe.
Dr F V Moyo has dedicated 19 years experience in anaesthesiology and is a Founding Fellow of the Colleges of Anaesthesiology for East Central and Southern Africa. She has a special interest in regional anaesthesia and attained a WFSA Fellowship for Regional anaesthesia.
Her keen interest in training in the health sector earned her the University of Zimbabwe Health Education and Leadership fellowship.
Dr Moyo enjoys working with young people in professional and social circles. She believes in inspiring them to grow into confident , competent individuals as they take their place and contribute to advancements in medicine and society.
